NUTRITION AND FOOD SECURITY EMPOWERMENT PROJECT FOR MOTHERS IN THE WEST AND NORTH
WEST REGIONS OF CAMEROON.
BACKGROUND
Food and nutrition insecurity is one of the main problems facing Cameroon. Although the overall
situation has shown a slight improvement in 2021, the Global Hunger Index 2021 ranked the country
74th out of 116 countries assessed, with the North West Region being the most affected (40% of
households).
The project proposes the implementation of training activities to improve the capacity of women and
mothers of children under 5 years of age in nutrition, food and mother and child health. Complementary
to this, the figure of “Counsellor Mother” will be created for each community, who will be trained to
improve their knowledge and skills in the promotion of healthy practices and growth monitoring, so that
the health, safety and well-being of the community is ensured in the long term.
GOAL:
Goal of the project is directly associated with the SDG 2. ZERO HUNGER: End hunger, achieve food
security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Target 2.2: By 2030, end all forms
of malnutrition, including achieving, by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and wasting
in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and
lactating women and older persons.
OBJECTIVES:
To reduce the prevalence of child malnutrition through nutrition and food security training for 150
mothers of children under 5 years of age in 5 communities in the West and North West Regions of
Cameroon.
